paint modern subjects.

COLUMBUS – From March 2 through March 31, The Mansion 731 will present an emerging artist exhibition titled “MUSED”, featuring work by classically trained oil painter and local artist Cassidy Boyuk. MUSED is a series of portraits that combine the Baroque elements and techniques of Boyuk’s classical training with modern subjects.

Using the opulent patterns, luxurious materials, and dignified poses of Edwardian and Victorian portraiture, Boyuk’s series captures the cultural identity and self-expression of the people of Gen Z.

“My artwork asks who we as a society deem important enough for painted portraiture, and what the genre looks like when our answers don’t have prerequisites like age, class and status,” said Boyuk.

Organized by The Mansion 731 with support from Olde Town East Arts, MUSED will also feature the first painting in her new series, examining mythology in a modern context and through the female gaze. Greek myths about women, often dealing with female rage, objectification, and societal control, are stories that have been told visually by men for centuries. Boyuk hopes to work with models to portray these myths through the lens of the modern woman.

“MUSED will be The Mansions first show of 2024. Cassidy’s work caught our eye because of her classical aesthetic. We knew it would look amazing in our historic building,” said Alex Anthony, curator of the emerging artists shows at The Mansion 731.

The opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 731 East Broad Street, The Mansion 731, a half-mile from Columbus Museum of Art. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
